Bric-a-brac Bunkers

(Try saying that in a hurry!)

I found a shoddy crate thing (a rustic spice rack, maybe) in a charity shop for £2. It was labelled bric-a-brac, but all I saw was a pair of bunkers for my newly painted plague marines to hunker down in!

First, I sawed it into three pieces. I discarded the middle section.

Next I attached some spare spikey bits I had leftover from a 40k Chaos Rhino kit – seemingly a good kit if you want a bunch of extra spoikes! I used sprue clippings to make a ladder, some front details and some bars for the right bunker’s embrasure. I used nail beads to add big reinforced rivets.

Both had their plastic parts primed with a white colour forge spray paint. Then I coated the wood. The one on the left received a thick coating of modge podge and baking soda. On the right bunker, I started with vallejo diorama earth texture paste on the top and sides, but I was struggling to achieve a satisfying texture so I switched to modge and soda.
Upon reflection, I should have based both with the modge and soda and then added some crusty details with the earth texture.

Left bunker after its base paint. I used poster paints for the grey and army painter speed paints (broadsword silver, brazen copper and pallid bone) for the details.

Sponged on some edge highlighting, again poster paints.

Now for the fun stuff! Vallejo enamel washes, rust and streaking grime.

Earth tone pigment powders, applied liberally with a dry brush.

Even chaos marines (maybe, especially chaos marines) get bored when they are on duty. A little graffiti can make a bunker feel… lived in 🙂

Righto, first bunker: complete. On to the second.

Base paints and edge highlighting complete, following the same recipe as the left bunker.

Add the rust paste. Better to do this before applying the enamel washes for a more coherent and realistic rusty look, in my opinion.

Edit: I reckon this graffiti should have been yellow or white. The red doesn’t pop against the earth tones.

Finished the job with graffiti, enamel wash and pigment powder.

My plague marines settled in quickly!
